FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION
FUE Hair Transplants in Raleigh, NC
Individualized Hair Restoration Without a Linear Donor Scar
Jernigan’s offers FUE hair transplantation using the WAW extraction system, with traditional, Stealth, and No-Shave options tailored to your hair, donor area, and goals.
What Is an FUE Hair Transplant?
Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is a hair transplant technique in which individual follicular units are removed from the donor area and transplanted into areas where additional hair is desired.
Unlike FUT, FUE does not require the removal of a strip of scalp or create a linear donor scar. The extraction pattern, amount of shaving, and overall approach can be adjusted based on the individual patient and procedure.
At Jernigan’s, we offer several FUE options to accommodate different hair lengths, procedure sizes, and preferences.
HOW FUE WORKS
Donor Hair Is Selected
Healthy follicular units are identified within the donor area, typically along the back and sides of the scalp.
Follicles Are Extracted
Individual follicular units are carefully removed using the FUE extraction technique selected for your procedure.
Grafts Are Placed
The harvested grafts are prepared and placed into recipient sites designed according to your hairline, existing hair, and restoration plan.
Want to Keep More of Your Existing Hair?
Not every FUE procedure requires the entire donor area to be shaved.
For appropriate candidates, Jernigan’s may perform a Stealth FUE, where a smaller shaved area is concealed beneath longer hair, or a No-Shave FUE, where individual donor hairs are trimmed for extraction.
These approaches can be especially appealing to patients who want to maintain their existing hairstyle and make the donor area less noticeable during early recovery.
From NeoGraft to the WAW FUE System
Jernigan’s has used different technologies throughout the years to perform FUE hair transplantation, including the NeoGraft system.
As our FUE approach evolved, we transitioned to the Devroye WAW FUE System, which is the technology we currently use for follicular unit extraction.
NeoGraft helped introduce a more automated approach to FUE extraction, including suction-assisted graft collection. With WAW, our team uses a more hands-on extraction process that allows the technique to be adjusted throughout the procedure based on the individual characteristics of the hair, follicles, and scalp.
Why We Made the Transition
Greater hands-on control during extraction
Ability to adjust technique throughout the procedure
Less reliance on suction-assisted graft collection
Better suited to the individualized FUE approach used at Jernigan’s
The technology is only one part of an FUE procedure—the experience of the surgical team, donor management, graft handling, and placement are equally important.
Why Patients Consider FUE
No Linear Donor Scar
Follicles are extracted individually rather than by removing a strip of scalp.
Flexible Hair Length
FUE can work well for patients who prefer to wear their hair shorter.
Multiple Shaving Options
Traditional, Stealth, and No-Shave approaches allow the donor plan to be individualized.
Individualized Planning
The extraction pattern and number of grafts are planned around the donor area and restoration goals.
Is FUE Right for You?
FUE may be considered for men and women experiencing different patterns of hair loss, but the right approach depends on more than the area you want restored.
During your consultation, the Jernigan’s team will evaluate factors such as:
- Your pattern and progression of hair loss
- Donor-area density
- Hair texture and characteristics
- The number of grafts that may be needed
- Your preferred hairstyle
- Previous hair transplant procedures
- Your long-term restoration goals

What Our Patients Say
NO MATTER WHAT KIND OF HAIR LOSS YOU ARE EXPERIENCING, JERNIGAN’S IS HERE TO HELP
“I had an FUE transplant at Jernigan’s three months ago and my experience was great. Dr. Bains took great care of me and was very knowledgeable about the process and the best way to go about it. Same thing with the technicians working with him, who all had many years’ experience and training. It’s only been a short time and for the first time in a decade I have a full hair line. Excited to see the results in the coming months. Jernigan’s and Dr. Bains have helped me regain a lot of my confidence. Would highly recommend to anyone struggling with hair loss.” – Matt J.
Common Questions About FUE Hair Transplants
Does FUE leave a scar?
FUE does not create the linear donor scar associated with FUT. Because follicles are individually extracted, small extraction sites are created throughout the donor area and generally become less noticeable as they heal.
Do I have to shave my head for FUE?
Not always. Depending on the size of the procedure, hair length, and donor area, traditional FUE, Stealth FUE, or No-Shave FUE may be considered.
How many grafts will I need?
The number varies based on the area being restored, existing density, donor supply, and your goals. A consultation is needed to develop an individualized estimate.
How long does an FUE procedure take?
Procedure time depends largely on the number of grafts being transplanted and the type of FUE being performed.
When will transplanted hair begin to grow?
Hair growth occurs gradually after transplantation. Your surgical team will explain the typical growth timeline and what to expect throughout the months following your procedure.
